NPC Name Generator

Generate ready-to-use DND NPC names for tavern keepers, city guards, rival merchants, cult leaders, and every unnamed face your players will somehow remember forever.

NPC names need to work fast. A good one lands in a single hearing, fits the scene without explanation, and gives the DM just enough texture to improvise the rest. This tool generates names with role tags and scene context so you can drop them into any encounter without prep.

Naming Rules

How NPC Names Usually Work

Culture snapshot

  • NPC names need to be memorable on first hearing because players will not always ask for a repeat.
  • The best NPC names carry a small implied story: a surname that hints at a trade, a first name that fits the culture, a sound that matches the scene.
  • DMs benefit most from names that are easy to say under pressure and distinctive enough to survive session notes.

Naming conventions

  • Match the name's weight to the NPC's importance. A one-scene guard needs a short, punchy name. A recurring merchant deserves something with more texture.
  • Use race phonetics as a quick shortcut: elven names flow, dwarven names land hard, human names can go either direction.
  • Surnames help even for minor NPCs because they make the character sound established rather than improvised.
  • Avoid names that are too similar to existing party member names; the table will confuse them immediately.
  • If the NPC has a clear role (blacksmith, innkeeper, guard captain), let the surname hint at that role without being too literal.

FAQ

NPC Naming FAQ

How many NPCs should I name before a session?

Name every NPC the players are likely to interact with more than once. For one-scene characters, a first name is enough. For recurring NPCs, add a surname and a one-line texture note.

Should NPC names match the party's race or the setting's culture?

Match the setting first. If your campaign is set in a dwarven city, most NPCs should have dwarven-style names even if the party is mixed. It makes the world feel consistent.

What is the fastest way to generate NPCs for an unplanned scene?

Use the 20-name batch mode, filter by scene type, and scan for the first name that fits. You do not need to read all 20. The right one usually jumps out.

Can I use these names for villain NPCs?

Yes. The alignment filter lets you skew toward evil or neutral builds. For recurring villains, consider using the /villain-name-generator/ for more specialized options.

How do I make NPCs feel distinct when I generate many at once?

Vary the race and role filters between batches. A town guard and a merchant should not sound like they came from the same family unless that is intentional.

Can I save NPC names between sessions?

Yes. Use the Name Favorites panel to save and export any generated name as TXT or CSV for your session notes.
